As the name suggests, a houseboat is a boat that has been modified to reflect a floating house. It has all the amenities of a house. Recreational houseboats often have powerful boat motors to provide mobility. Instead of hooking up to outside sanitation and utility services, a recreational houseboat may have its own electric generator, water tank and waste containment system. Houseboats are available in a wide variety of models and sizes, ranging from more modest 30 to 40 foot boats to 70 foot-plus luxury houseboat models. With a houseboat, you can often expect amenities equal to a hotel such as hot tubs, big-screen TVs, fireplaces, DVD players, and deluxe accommodations in private staterooms. Houseboats accommodate from 4 to 15 or more people, so it's very common to split the cost of a houseboat vacation trip between multiple families or groups.
Also called a motorboat, it is a vessel propelled by an internal combustion engine driving a jet pump or a propeller. It is designed to move quickly and can be used to pull water skiers, for racing, etc. The powerplant comes in 3 different versions - inboard, inboard/outboard, and outboard. A purely inboard boat contains everything except a shaft and a propeller inside the vessel. An inboard/outboard contains a hybrid of a powerplant and an outboard, where the internal combustion engine is contained inboard and the gear reduction and propeller are outside. An outboard motor is installed on the rear of a boat and contains the internal combustion engine, the gear reduction (Transmission), and the propeller.
A pontoon boat, also called a pleasure boat, typically floats and balances by means of two pontoons mounted lengthwise. They are typically powered by an outboard gas motor but can also run using a smaller, electric motor as well. Pontoon boats are usually best suited for freshwater ways.
Electric boats come in a variety of shapes and sizes. The most important feature is that they are powered by an electric motor with batteries instead of a conventional gas or diesel fuel powered engine.
A personal water craft (PWC) is a recreational watercraft that the rider sits or stands on, rather than inside of, as in a boat. Models have an inboard engine driving a pump jet that has a screw-shaped impeller to create thrust for propulsion and steering. Most are designed for two or three people, though four-passenger models exist. They are often referred by the names WaveRunner, Jet Ski, or Sea-Doo, which are brand names owned by Yamaha, Kawasaki, and Bombardier, respectively.
A sailboat or sailing boat is a boat propelled partly or entirely by sails. The term covers a variety of boats and varies by region and culture.
Fishing boats are used to catch fish in the sea, or on a lake or river. They range in size from small dingies to larger cruisers and are often not dedicated just to fishing. Most fishing boats come equipped with standard equipment required to catch fish such as fishing rod holders, live wells and more.
A kayak is a small human-powered boat. It typically has a covered deck, and a cockpit covered by a spray deck. It is propelled by a double-bladed paddle in the hands of a sitting paddler. A canoe is a small narrow boat, typically human-powered, though it may also be powered by sails or small electric or gas motors. Canoes usually are pointed at both bow and stern and are normally open on top, but can be covered. In its human-powered form, the canoe is ordinarily propelled by the use of paddles, with the number of paddlers (most commonly two) dependent on the size of the canoe.
